A Non Governmental Organization, Women Farmers Advancement Network (WOFAN) has supported 100 small businesses with starter kits and food items in commemoration of this year’s World Food Day to reduce the burdens of poverty in some selected rural areas of Kano State. WOFAN Executive Director, Hajia Salamatu Garba said the distribution was made at Gaida, Yankusa, Kadawa, Gargai and Chiromawa communities in Kano state, where about 40 tons of paddy rice was off taken from the farmers to enhance their marketing while 40 women groups benefited with processing machineries for rice and groundnut processing in a makeshift center provided for them. Solacebase reports that the two days event was conducted over the weekend. Saudat Mohammad, one of the beneficiaries who is a widow with 5 children expressed gratitude to WOFAN for the humanitarian gesture rendered to them. “I will never forget this day in my life and we will continue to pray for Hajiya Salamatu Garba. We were given ten thousand naira each, an big business umbrella and 10 mudus of rice and groundnut each”. The Ward head of Yan Kusa community , Kumbotso Local Government Area, Danlami Yan Kusa, said that one of the biggest challenge bedeviling the socio economic development of the area is the lack of support to small scale business, especially those owned by women. The community leader said, “WOFAN distributed food items and some tools to our women and youth, which will go a long way in helping their businesses”. Similarly, at Gaida community, about 240 beneficiaries drawn from women and youth groups were targeted and supported with 2 hammer worth N650,000 each, bags of paddy rice and groundnuts to boost their businesses. Speaking during the exercise, the philanthropist said WOFAN has also commenced an outreach for 100 less privileged individuals in a bid to make their lives better.
