Kano citizens assured of agric, water, sanitation boost soon – Amina Shekarau WIFE of Kano state governor, Hajiya Amina Ibrahim Shekarau has assured support towards providing an enabling environment that will promote agriculture, water and sanitation projects in the state.

Hajiya Amina made the statement while declaring open a stake holder’s strategic planning meeting on sustainable agriculture, water and sanitation projects, organized by her office in conjunction with Women Farmers Advancement Network (WOFAN). She said the provision of portable water plays a critical role in natural environment, health, socio-economic well being ensuring food security and agricultural production in the state and the country at large.
Hajiya Amina also said government will do all that it can to stamp out the menace of poor sanitation caused by inadequate portable drinking water which has been the biggest cause of infection, deprivation of children to education, and women to dignity and privacy, particularly in rural areas where women in some areas go to further places to fetch water for daily use.
According to her, some of the areas to be prioritized by the projects include providing water and latrines to schools, providing latrines close to homes in rural areas to reduce violence against women when they go out to ease themselves, particularly at night. She further announced a state visit by an executive director of Gender Water Alliance, a Netherlands-based international Non-Governmental Organisation that is working to promote women and men equitable access to adequate and portable water in over 150 countries of the world, and other five wives of governors selected with her by  organisations as ambassadors of agriculture, water and sanitation.
Earlier in her remarks, the national coordinator of WOFAN, had said the meeting will help in ensuring the success of the programme and thanked the wife of the governor for her support to the cause of provision of welfare to the less privileged in the state.
In his welcome address, the managing director of Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASA), said his agency is always ready to partner with any agency that will bring positive support in ensuring easier access to portable water in the rural areas in the state.
