WOFAN and SGP_UNDP_GEF mark World Environment Day 2021 in Doka and Tofa communities of Kano state

The Women Farmers Advancement Network-WOFAN in partnership with the Small Grants Programme (SGP) of the UNDP-GEF marked the 2021 world Environment Day with 720 women and youth peer leaders in TOFA and DOKA communities of Kano State.

 Each peer leader has 30 members to mentor on environmental degradation, Forest Restoration and food security using sustainable strategies.

The event which welcomed the entire community showcased 600 women and 120 male youths already trained by WOFAN on various agroforestry and food security management skills, seedling production and management thereby using the day for the trained WOFAN members to create awareness on sustaining the glory of our environment, reducing carbon emission and recycling of plastic wastes and undegradable materials littering the environment.
The 720 women and trained youths demonstrated the planting of Neem and fruit trees and their benefits to community members in attendance. Each of the trained youths referred to as the peer and their 30 members each will nurture to maturity the neem and fruit trees to restore the glory of deforestation in the community and nurture the neem and fruit to maturity and gain from the various benefits of the trees. At the end of the event each of the community member also had a neem tree to individually plant in strategic agreed locations of their communities for nurturing.

At the opening of the event, the ED WOFAN, Hajia Salamatu Garba said the world Environment Day is celebrated on June 5 every year to remind people about the importance of nature. It is celebrated across the globe to tell people that nature should not be taken for granted and must be respected for its values. It is we the community members especially women who can forge ahead in salvaging the delicate situation the world find itself in terms of carbon emission, disposal of wastes like pesticide containers and pure water plastic bags and bottles as well as nurturing indigenous crops that are getting close to extinction.”

The Youth leader in Tofa- Abba Rabiu in his remarks called on government to look into the increasing menace caused by factory effluence, industrial pollution, as well as materials from hospital wastes like masks, syringes, blood bags that litter various waste collection centers which are left unattended to. He mentioned that this can create more harm than good to the environment.

Hajia Umma Ado and Khadija Suleiman of women nutrition mentoring group called on all community members to support our actions to protect Mother Earth and our efforts to ensure the full implementation of the sustainable strategies of salvaging the environment.
