WOFAN marks 2013 Fathers’ Day in Bauchi State to support WASH project

WOFAN marked the 2013 Father’s Day in Bauchi State as a pilot, with a community level event aimed at mainstreaming gender into development issues while empowering community and showcasing the roles men play as fathers and leaders in the community

.  Held inside Ganjuwa Local Government Secretariat in Kafin Madaki, the event was hosted by the Local Government Authority in Ganjuwa LGA.

The occasion which was chaired by the Vice Chairman, Alhaji Ibrahim T Babayo, also had in attendance all the directors and heads of departments of the LGA Prominent women leaders and politicians as well as community women were the entire event that was marked for the time in the state. For many in Bauchi State, this year’s celebration is the first time we are hearing about Father’s Day.

Though the third Sunday of June every year is set aside across the world to celebrate the roles fathers play in families and society at large, not many people are aware of the celebration in Nigeria., says the chairman of the occasion who also said that the occasion is also a motivation for men to be more committed to supporting women and taking up their gender roles in the society seriously.

 Ganjuwa LGA announced the donation of a hectare of land to  the women’s community garden to raise economic plants that can earn them income throughout the year to use as a revolving scheme to support their community water project

 While thanking the chairman of the local government, WOFAN’s Project Facilitator Esther Patrick, explained that in addition to the objectives of the Father’s Day event already spelt out, the event was meant to fundraise and stimulate   support for community women to enhance their income generation activities.  she  explained that WOFAN will donate some seedlings  like the Moringa, fruits and vegetables  and  will also provide technical assistance to the groups to enable them manage the garden appropriately and maximize benefits of the garden beyond just harvesting and selling produce.

 Also speaking at the event, the wife of the LGA Chairman, Hajia Halima S Bala expressed joy at the contributions WOFAN has made to her community in the short time the organization has been on ground. She said the WASH Project has brought changes and hope and that the income generating activities being introduced will also make positive impact on the lives of the women especially that women are also given recognition and opportunity on issues that affect them.

She promised to plead with her husband to give all necessary support to grow the opportunities that will be created by the new activities for the progress of women and the community. She also promised that security will be provided to take care of the new garden which is being started as part of the income generating activities for women groups in the community.

And, the Director of Agriculture in the LGA, Alhaji Sule Sidi Bara, promised to assist the women groups accordingly. He said since the first venture has to do with agriculture, his department will be ready and willing to assist the women group in every way possible to make the venture a success and support an irrigation scheme during the dry season.

Even before the women groups asked for help from fathers, the Councilor representing one of the wards in the community, Alhaji Adamu Rabiu Soro, pledged, on behalf of himself and the other three counselors from the town, to support the venture with more seedlings so that the women can expand the garden beyond what is planted on the occasion of the 2013 Father’s Day. Women are targeted to have at least 2000 seedlings of Moringa to raise family income and nutrition
