WOFAN and Katsina Govt Train 150 Women on Production and Presentation of Pastries and confectionaries to enhance Women enterprise and vocational skills in Daura senatorial Zone of Katsina state.
150 women from the 12 local government Areas of Daura Senatorial zone received refresher training to improve their skills and learn new opportunities to expand their businesses by increasing income generation with new ideas.
The Katsina State Government sponsored the installation of an industrial mixer and oven with the capacity of producing 5000 loaves of bread at a time which can be produced 4 times in a day making 20,000 loaves per day to support women cooperatives in the area.
The refresher training, which was organized by the state Ministry of Women Affairs (MOWA) in conjunction with Service to Humanity Foundation (SHF), was facilitated by WOFAN
The 150 participants, who already are experienced pastry and confectionery makers learnt new ways of producing the pastries and confectioneries as well as hygienic and better ways of presenting the products to the public in a cost effect manner.
The trainees learnt new ways of making popular local and modern pastries and confectioneries like waina, sinasir, dublan, taaliya, bread, meat pie, cake, and so on. In addition, they also learnt how to make new pastries and confectioneries like Shawarma as well as cake decoration for weddings and other special occasions.
• Baking in the industrial oven at Daura Bakery Centre by participant
• Trainees learn new and better ways of making pastries just as they learn cake decoration for the first time
Also, a revolutionary local oven designed and fabricated by WOFAN was introduced to the trainees as a healthy and fuss-free alternative to the use of fire wood, pots and sand to bake pastries. The fabricated oven eliminates the use of fire wood and kerosene as it is heated with improved charcoal stoves operated by simple batteries which provides a cheap alternative to gas/electric ovens which are too expensive for indigent women to own or use.
The 2 day refresher training was brought to a befitting end with an impressive closing ceremony which was attended by the First Lady of Katsina State, Her Excellency, Hajia (Dr) Fatima Ibrahim Shema, wife of the Deputy Governor, Hajia Lubabatu Abdullahi Faskari, wife of the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Hajia Rukayya Yau Umar Gwajo-gwajo and other dignitaries.
Before declaring the training closed, the First Lady took a tour of bakery facilities, encountering trainees in the process of making different types of pastries and confectioneries.
In her closing remarks, she praised the commitment and dedication displayed by trainees, pledging that the state government would do its best to help them grow their pastry and confectionery businesses by supporting them with materials and infrastructure. She disclosed that the state government has already started this support by reactivating the Daura Bakery which had been moribund since it was constructed during the military era.
The First Lady further disclosed that centres like the Daura Bakery would be activated in the two other Senatorial Districts in the state to support women pastry and confectionery makers.
At the end of the closing ceremony, the First Lady distributed empowerment items and cash to the trainees to enable them grow their pastry and confectionery making trades. Certificates of attendance were also distributed after the First Lady had launched the mobile snacks vending machine.
