All roads led to THE WOFAN ICT center on Friday 6th March 2015 for the opening ceremony and orientation exercise to introducing young school levers, youths , women and girls especially from the farmers family and less privileged homes to appreciating computer and effective use of ICT to provide opportunities for them
to become literate in computer, appreciate the use of ICT tools and communication strategies as well as use them to tap opportunities slated for them and track such opportunities until it happens for them for helping them scale in life! These beneficiaries will in return serve their respective LGAs, support their parents to translate and use some tools that might be important for the farming and marketing businesses and also use ICT to become strong advocates of their own development, track election promises and make their votes count!
The initiative is which is a partnership project between WOFAN and an ICT focused CSO– (Center for Information Technology and Development –CITAD), also aimed at improving women and youths ICT literacy in the fast growing technology age with the objectives of developing their capacity in computer appreciation, GSM repair, computer repair, geographical information system (GIS), among others. With lots of anticipation that when women and youths are ICT literate, would create more job opportunities and importantly create access to information which will be the beginning of “making it happen” as they become relevant to the national, regional and global economic and political scale up ! and this coincides with the 2015 IWD day theme –
About 120 youths comprising 70 females and 50 males commenced this exercise across Kano state to mark the 2015 international women’s day as WOFAN’s contribution to the education and development of women and youths. Beneficiaries of this 3 months exercise are expected to step down to other youths in their respective LGAS to share and spread their skills/ knowledge across the state to enable more of their peer groups to benefit from the train the trainer exercise. The beneficiaries were also trained on computer based test (CBT), an exercise needed for entrance examinations to tertiary institutions as a large number of school leavers in Nigeria failed their entrance exams because they could not use the computer to answer the questions as is the requirement!
At the opening ceremony of the computer appreciation and ICT friendly exercises, Hajia Salamatu Garba the Executive Director and founder of WOFAN gave her support to all JAMB candidates that will be writing the CBT (Computer Based Test) for the forth-coming JAMB examinations. She posited that WOFAN shall offer JAMB candidates a free tutorial class on how to successfully write and pass the CBT JAMB Examinations.
Hajia Salamatu also stated that it is only ICT that can help in scaling up farmers activities, removing middle men from the market, improve advocacy and giving people a voice and confidence to speak on issues that affect them and demand positive responses from policy and opinion leaders and this explains why CITAD and WOFAN are taking a lead in encouraging youths to improve of their well being through ICT and other technology friendly activities!
